Dr. Derek Lumbard
Dr. Lumbard is a trauma and critical care surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Hennepin Healthcare. He is a research scholar with Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute, a Learning Health Systems Scholar at the University of Minnesota, and Chair of Trauma Research at Hennepin County Medical Center. Dr. Lumbard completed his medical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and general surgery residency training at Hennepin Healthcare followed by surgical critical care training at University of Texas - San Antonio.
Dr. Nygaard completed her PhD from the University of Minnesota in Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology with a focus on viral pathogenesis. Since joining Hennepin County Medical Center in 2012, she has focused on clinical outcomes based research in the areas of trauma, health disparities, and medical education.
Kadija Mussa, MS LAFMT
Kadija Mussa is a Research Scientist at the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute and a Ph.D. candidate in Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota, with minors in Population Studies and Quantitative Methods. Her research focuses on family dynamics, mental health, and the impact of social strain and support on diverse populations. She is also an experienced mental health practitioner with a background in strategic family therapy, serving various communities in Minnesota. Kadija has published work on African American couples, incarcerated fathers, and mental health among immigrant populations.
Kadija is proficient in statistical methodologies such as longitudinal data analysis, hierarchical modeling, and dyadic data analysis using tools like R, SPSS, and Stata. She has been honored with several fellowships, including the AAMFT Minority Doctoral Fellowship and the Olsen Family Fellowship.
Emily Colonna, MS
Ms. Colonna has been the senior research coordinator with the Department of Surgery at Hennepin Healthcare since 2018.
Charly Vang, MPH
Mr. Vang joined the surgery research team as a data scientist at Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute in 2024. He attained his master's degree in Public Health Data Science from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.
Rediat Tilahun
Rediat Tilahun, MS joined the Surgery Research team as a Senior Research Assistant at Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute in 2024. She earned a master's degree in medical Physiology from Loyola University Chicago, where she developed a foundation in biomedical sciences.
